Breaking; Pirates Bring Back Red-Hot Super-star on Minor League Deal After Impressive Triple-A Run

The Pittsburgh Pirates have brought back utility player Nick Solak, signing him to a new minor-league contract, according to MLB.com’s Alex Stumpf.

Solak had initially parted ways with the team after being removed from the 40-man roster, opting for free agency. However, both sides have now reached an agreement that allows Solak to remain within the organization under a restructured deal. The return signals that the Pirates still see value in the veteran’s potential and recent minor league performance.

Solak’s stint with the Pirates’ major league roster was short and largely unremarkable. During his limited opportunity, he managed just one hit in 11 at-bats. Despite the lackluster showing at the plate, the 29-year-old has been delivering standout numbers in the minors, showcasing the kind of form that may earn him another shot in the big leagues.

Playing for the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate earlier this season, Solak posted an impressive slash line of .389/.449/.619. These numbers reflect a strong offensive presence, with a high batting average, excellent on-base percentage, and solid power—an encouraging sign for the Pirates as they continue to evaluate depth and options within their farm system.

Solak, a former second-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2016, has spent time with multiple organizations including the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, and Atlanta Braves. Known for his defensive versatility, Solak has experience playing second base, left field, and third base, giving the Pirates flexibility in how and where they might utilize him should another call-up become necessary.

Throughout his career, Solak has shown flashes of potential at the major league level. In 2019, during his rookie season with the Rangers, he hit .293 with five home runs in just 33 games. While he hasn’t consistently maintained that level of production in the majors since, his strong performance in Triple-A this year suggests he still has the tools to contribute.

For the Pirates, the decision to re-sign Solak on a minor league deal is a low-risk move with possible upside. With a rebuilding team looking to develop talent and keep competition open across the roster, Solak’s experience and current form make him a worthwhile addition to their depth chart.

As the season progresses, it remains to be seen whether Solak’s strong play in the minors will translate into another opportunity at the major league level. For now, he’ll continue working in the Pirates’ minor league system, hoping to build on his momentum and earn another shot in Pittsburgh.
