Breaking; From Final Pick to $38M Star: Another Five-star Inks Four-Year Deal to Remain Key Sharpshooter in Cleveland’s Rising Backcourt

Free agent sharpshooter Sam Merrill is staying put in Cleveland, as sources reveal he has agreed to a four-year, $38 million contract extension with the Cavaliers, according to ESPN.

The new deal, negotiated by Merrill’s agents Kieran Piller and Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports, marks a significant achievement for the 60th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft — a player who has carved out a valuable role in the NBA despite entering as the final pick of his class.

This contract solidifies Merrill’s place in Cleveland’s backcourt rotation, joining All-Star guard Darius Garland and former No. 2 pick Lonzo Ball. The Cavaliers are expected to lose Ty Jerome in free agency, making Merrill’s retention even more critical for their guard depth moving forward.

At 29 years old, Merrill emerged as a key contributor last season, especially from beyond the arc. He averaged 5.2 three-point attempts per game, connecting at a strong 37.2% clip. That followed an even more impressive 2023–24 campaign, where he shot over 40% from deep — proving his consistency and value as a perimeter threat.

In what became a breakout year, Merrill played in a career-high 71 games, becoming one of the Cavaliers’ most dependable role players. His performance helped elevate the team into one of the NBA’s most efficient three-point shooting squads, providing crucial spacing on offense and keeping opposing defenses honest.

Merrill’s journey with the Cavaliers began in 2023, when he was signed on a 10-day contract. However, he quickly earned the trust of the coaching staff and front office, leading to a guaranteed multi-year deal shortly after. That contract expired this offseason, paving the way for this new, long-term agreement — a reward for his perseverance, professionalism, and on-court impact.

For Cleveland, keeping Merrill is a strategic move as the team looks to maintain momentum and continue building around its core. With the departure of Jerome likely imminent, Merrill’s ability to play both guard spots and contribute consistently as a shooter makes him a valuable piece for head coach and front office alike.

In a league where shooting and depth are premium assets, Merrill’s story stands out — from being a late draft pick to earning a multi-million dollar deal through hard work and resilience. His return ensures the Cavaliers retain a reliable floor spacer and a key piece in their pursuit of sustained playoff contention.
