Good News; Head Coach Craig Counsell Of Cubs’  Confirmed Top Prospect Shines in Triple-A with Three-Hit Performance

 

Chicago Cubs’ highly ranked prospect, BJ Murray Jr., showcased his impressive potential with a standout performance for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday night. Ranked as the Cubs’ No. 3 prospect and No. 75 overall by MLB Pipeline, Murray came just a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, delivering three hits in five at-bats, scoring twice and driving in two runs in Iowa’s 10-4 win over the Columbus Clippers.

 

Murray started his evening strong, notching a double in the second inning and later crossing the plate on a single by teammate Alexander Canario. He continued to dominate at the plate, adding an RBI single in the third and a triple in the seventh inning. Although he didn’t quite complete the cycle, his night was a clear reminder of why he’s considered one of the most exciting young talents in the Cubs’ system.

 

The 24-year-old third baseman and first baseman has been gaining momentum in recent weeks. Known for his disciplined approach at the plate, Murray has consistently shown the ability to reach base and deliver timely hits. Over his last 10 games, he’s batting .353 (12-for-34) with four extra-base hits, five RBIs, and seven runs scored. His performance on Tuesday only added to his growing case for a potential major league call-up later this season.

Originally drafted by the Cubs in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of Florida Atlantic University, Murray has steadily climbed through the ranks of Chicago’s farm system. In 2023, he posted an impressive .263/.382/.445 slash line with 23 doubles, 16 home runs, and 64 RBIs across 120 games between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. His power and plate discipline have continued to develop, and he remains a valuable asset at both corner infield positions.

 

This season in Triple-A, Murray has battled through early-season struggles, but his recent surge has put him back on track. He’s now slashing .250/.372/.390 with five home runs, 35 RBIs, and 46 walks in 64 games — numbers that reflect his ability to both get on base and contribute in run-scoring opportunities.

 

Defensively, Murray has also made strides, providing reliable coverage at third base while also filling in at first when needed. His versatility makes him a strong candidate for a utility role with the big-league club, especially as the Cubs continue to evaluate infield depth in the second half of the season.
